FAQ

A. Safescape Laddertube is made from resilient plastics material (LLDPE) and creates a fully enclosed tube which does not allow ingress of water, dirt and rocks.

A.

  • Lighter – at most half the weight of its lightest competitor.
  • Brighter – although Safescape Laddertube can be made in any colour, the stock offering will be safety yellow.
  • Safer – by its nature Safescape Laddertube will not allow water, dirt or small rocks into the travelway.
  • Longer lasting – as Safescape Laddertube is made from plastic, it will not rust and degrade over time.
  • Less maintenance – as salt water is not able to enter the ladderway regular de-scaling of salt buildup is not required.
  • Reduced raise size – the compact and strong nature of the product allows efficient use of space meaning Safescape Laddertube is the only product on the market which complies with AS1657 design rules and still fits in a 1m raisebore.
  • Faster delivery – Safescape laddertube can be made at a rate of 50m per day from the day of order and can easily be upscaled compared to an average delivery time from order for a galvanized steel ladder in the order of 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Reduced impact at installation – due to the reduced weight of Safescape Laddertube, the majority of installations can be achieved with two miners and a 4WD light vehicle with tray mounted crane. Compared to galvanized steel ladders which normally require a Crane and Integrated Tool Carrier for installation.

A. Yes. As Safescape Laddertube is made from plastic, it will not rust and degrade over time.

A. No. As Safescape Laddertube is made from plastic, it will not rust and degrade over time, therefore eliminating the cost of replacement due to corrosion.

A. Yes. The Safescape Laddertube meets or exceeds the design and testing requirements of AS1657. In addition the Laddertube meets or exceeds all standards contained within the draft replacement standard DR01136.

AS 1657 is a 1992 standard and requires that where a length of ladder extends beyond 6m in a straight line and it is not practicable to include intermediate landings, provision should be made to ensure that a person cannot fall more than 6m. This clause has led to inefficient use of space and the inclusion of fixed platforms which create hazards and undue difficulty when attempting to carry out rope rescue in an escapeway. At Safescape we do not believe that falling 6m is acceptable and therefore we include a fixed static line fall arrest system in all of our Laddertube escapeways. Our system works in fall restraint mode and does not allow the user to fall. This allows us to include more practical rest platforms which can be stowed out of the way allowing a smooth straight line stretcher pull.

A. Yes. An engineering assessment will be provided to site with the installation of the Safescape Laddertube in line with 4.2.1 of the draft Australian Standard DR01136.

A. Yes.

  • Steps are deep and comfortable with a tread grip on the edge
  • The design of the Safescape Laddertube enables rapid evacuation.
  • Rest Platforms are designed to allow enough room to climb around or can be easily pushed into a stowed position to allow a straight line stretcher pull.

A. No. The Safescape Laddertube is designed to be installed in 1m diameter raisebored rise or larger.

A. By design a Safescape Laddertube will not rust and degrade over time. Additionally, as salt water cannot enter the Laddertube, there is no need to regularly de-scale the ladderway.

A. Laddertube can be burnt however it is self extinguishing when removed from the flame and it is very difficult to ignite in the first place.  90mm high pressure poly pipe commonly used for compressed air and water pumping underground has a similar wall thickness and would give a very close proximation to the actual fire rating.  As with conventional escapeways consisting of wooden and steel ladders or steel ladders with poly services running through them, Laddertube does not add any real risk in regards to fire safety.
