Safescape Blog

Mines are the ideal place for innovation. Whether it be underground or in the treatment plant every mine is different. These differences breed innovation as we apply new ideas to solve our unique problems. Because this is part of our every day lives, at Safescape we believe that miners don't get enough credit for their innovative ways. Our Great Mines Think Alike blog page has been created to give a forum for spreading the innovative systems that we see at different mines in our travels. If you are interested in having news of your innovation included in our blog, please contact us.

Bevo's good idea

Publised on March 21, 2011 10:24 by Safescape

In March 2011 Safescape travelled back to the Miitel Nickel Mine in Kambalda to install Mincor's fourth Laddertube. This installation is a 98.7m ladderway inside a 3.5m diameter raisebore. Miitel isn't the easiest place to mine for either the company or the contractor but it is a great place for us to work. Both Mincor and Byrnecut employees are always very helpful and supportive. In fact one of the Byrnecut jumbo operators, Bevo made a suggestion to Safescape installer Nigel that we are currently looking at implementing.

Bevo made the point that while he's happy enough to climb a ladder if he has to, he does not like heights and so his method is to avoid looking up or down while he's climbing. The problem with this is you don't know how far you have to go to get to the top. He suggested that we include a series of stickers or signs of some sort which indicate the distance remaining and also what level you are actually going to come out on. Because escapeways often bypass levels and go from one part of a mine to another he thought people would like to know where they are going to finish up before they get there.

At Safescape we all think this is a great idea and we're looking at getting special signs made up that we can include in each ladderway indicating distance and also location. Thanks Bevo and thanks to the rest of the guys at Miitel for looking after us again.
